Director of Research: Michael Holland

Mike Holland is an economist with extensive experience in economic and financial analysis specialising in industrial organisation theory and competition policy and regulation. He is an adjunct faculty lecturer in economics at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).

He has also lectured at the University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria and at the South African campus of Bond University, Australia. Prior business experience includes Head of Research and Development in the treasuries of Rand Merchant Bank and First National Bank, and Dean of the RMB Academy, the Training Division of the bank. Previous positions include Financial Planning Manager for FNB and Barclays National Bank, a Financial Planning Manager for a U.K. Conglomerate and as an economist in the U.K. Motor Industry. He holds a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Economics from the University of London and a M.Sc. from City, University of London.

Fanie Joubert

Fanie Joubert studied at the University of Pretoria, where he obtained amongst others an honours degree in economics and master’s degree in econometrics. During his post graduate studies, he worked as academic tutor and later junior lecturer at the University. In 2006 he moved to the private sector where he was employed as Economist at the Efficient Group. Here he got introduced to the financial markets from an asset management perspective, while having an opportunity to apply and sharpen his practical economic knowledge.

To pursue further studies, he moved back to academia in 2009 where he was appointed as senior lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of South Africa (UNISA). In 2019 he obtained his PhD (Economics) from Unisa which focusses on voluntary saving by households in South Africa. Apart from his studies, he has diverse research interests that include the financial markets, sustainable development, and fiscal sustainability.

He has addressed various local and global conferences, is often quoted in the media and is a participant in the Bureau of Market Research (BMR) ‘Economist of the Year’ competition. He has undertaken qualitative and quantitative consultation work for, amongst others, PriceMetrics Economic Research Consultancy, GOPA Group Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd, the Commercial Aviation Association of Southern Africa NPC (CAASA) and Africa Aerospace & Defence (AAD).

Andile Nikani

Andile Nikani is an M&A legal expert and a corporate strategist. He was the Executive Head of the Takeover Regulation Panel (TRP).  Most of his time at the TRP was spent on strategy formulation, strategy implementation, and risk management.  He also made rulings on complex M&As that involved companies listed on stock exchanges operated by the JSE Limited and the Cape Town Stock Exchange. He spent time at the Takeover Panel of the UK and the Takeover Panel of Hong Kong, where he served as a visiting regulator on public M&As.

He holds a master’s degree in corporate strategy from GIBS (Master of Philosophy, Corporate Strategy). He also holds a Master’s Degree in Law (LLM) from the University of Liverpool in the UK, a Bachelor’s Degree in law (LLB) from the University of Cape Town, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts (BA) from the University of Cape Town.

Professor Jannie Rossouw

Jannie Rossouw is a visiting professor at Wits Business School after service as its Interim Head. He was formerly Head of School, School of Economic and Business Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand. He retired as Deputy General Manager of the South African Reserve Bank (Head: Currency Management) in 2012. His main academic research interests are inflation perceptions, inflation credibility and inflation expectations, and the sustainability of expenditure patterns of the South African government. He has published numerous academic and other papers on these and other research interests.

He holds an M.Com (Economics) an MBA degree from the University of Pretoria and a PhD degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
