Training and Education in Economics

We offer a range of short courses for staff in companies and other organisations wishing to develop or enhance their skills and expertise in economic analysis. Courses can be customised to meet clients’ requirements and held at their premises. We also open courses available in the evenings for those interested in developing their knowledge of economics.

Lecturers

Mike Holland and Professor Jannie Rossouw have each lectured economics for over twenty years at university undergraduate and post-graduate level.

Sample Courses

Microeconomics for Managers and Professionals (open course)

This course introduces (at an introductory MBA level) microeconomic analysis and its application to managerial decision-making. The aim of the course is to provide a rigorous analysis of microeconomic principles and how they can be used to improve business decisions.

Topics covered include: fundamental concepts (economic profit, opportunity costs, marginal analysis, time value of money); how markets work: value and exchange principles; demand and supply analysis including elasticities; applications of price theory to real markets; production and cost theory; industry analysis, nature and characteristics of competition in different market structures, game theory, pricing theory and practice.

Format: eight weekly evening lectures, class exercises and case studies. Location: at our offices in Sandton, 6-9pm. Cost: R8 750 per participant including textbook, lecture notes and refreshments. Numbers limited to ensure maximum class participation. No prior knowledge of economics required but numeracy is essential.

Microeconomics for Competition Lawyers

This purpose of this course is to provide competition lawyers with a sound and rigorous knowledge of microeconomics and industrial organisation theory that underlie competition law and policy. Topics covered include the nature and characteristics of value, exchange and competition in markets;, supply and demand analysis; elasticities of demand; cost behaviour; market and industry definitions and analysis; competition and welfare analysis in different market structures; game theory analysis of oligopolistic markets including collusive conduct; measurement of market power; models of vertical integration and restraints.

Format: weekly evening lectures for 12 weeks. The course is intensive and consists of lectures, exercises and case studies. No prior knowledge of economics is required.

Principles of Labour Market Economics

An introductory course designed for managers, professionals, trade union officials and others requiring an understanding of labour markets in South Africa.  Topics covered are recent trends in South African labour markets including facts and perceptions; value, exchange and competition in markets, nature and characteristics of product and labour markets; wage and employment determination in competitive labour markets; analysis of wage differentials; the economic impact of trade unions, the effects of minimum wages and other legislation; economics of human capital, education and training; and macroeconomic analysis of the labour market.

Format: two-day course consisting of lectures, group discussions, exercises and case studies. No prior knowledge of economics is required.
